Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the billionaire owner.

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
